04Appendix: A note on sources and methodology
The definitions used in this report are industry standard ‘best fits’ using standard industrial classification (SIC) codes. These do not map new work industries perfectly, for example jobs that might be creative or digital in nature are often classified in different industries due to that company’s SIC code. However as this report looks at businesses in different industries rather than employment, this is the most effective and robust methodology available.
There is some cross over between new work industry definitions, therefore the SIC code list below is not identical to the source definitions. Where possible we have used official statistics, for example ‘creative intensity’ to decide which industry to allocate each SIC code. Where this was not possible a judgement was made based on the evidence available.
