FutureStory: Southampton is the second in a series of forward-looking books promoting a wider understanding of how globalisation is changing everyday lives and jobs in six cities and regions.

The book and film showcase Southampton’s lengthy record of global trading, scientific inventiveness and new technologies with the help of locals telling their story of their city. They are brought to life by real examples of current issues at the heart of their communities and highlight how they are connected to the changing world around us more than ever before.

By showcasing real people and local businesses in Southampton and surrounds, the book shows how the jobs that people do, the cities that people live in, and the aspirations people have, are all being affected by growing trade, investment and the changing shape of the UK economy.

Many people in our cities are already adapting to this new future – businesses are finding their new niche, and schools, colleges and universities are giving students the range of skills and entrepreneurial know-how that they will need to succeed. We can’t ignore the changes in the world and in our cities.  We need to ask ourselves how to identify the building blocks for the future, and how to ensure that people in our cities will be able to make the most of these new opportunities.  FutureStory aims to help its readers to consider, debate and act upon these challenges.

Centre for Cities has been commissioned to produce these by the Talent and Enterprise Taskforce (a DCSF/ BIS initiative).
