The move to deliver control over healthcare to London announced on Tuesday by George Osborne is another significant milestone in a year in which devolution has been at the heart of the Government’s political agenda – with a host of city-deals now in place for most major UK cities and the recent Spending Review confirming the Government’s plan to devolve business rates to local authorities.
However, as a new Centre for Cities report shows, to truly succeed in supporting places to prosper in the years ahead the Government needs to go even further in giving local leaders more control over their own finances.
