Unemployment and the pandemic – an emerging picture

The latest unemployment data and claimant counts across the country

Event starts at 11.00-12.00 on 28 May 2020 at Online

The economic impact of Coronavirus has been felt differently by different groups of people, industries and parts of the country. While we wait for a clear picture to emerge, the latest claimant count data gives us a sense of the impact of the first few weeks of lockdown on unemployment across the country – it also serves as a reminder of the state of local labour markets before the lockdown began.

In this event, Elena Magrini, Senior Analyst at Centre for Cities, presents the latest claimant count data and how it varies across the country, the economic context for different places and related industries and the policy implications, followed by a response from Clive Memmott, Chief Executive of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.

This is followed by a Q&A session chaired by Andrew Carter, Chief Executive of Centre for Cities.
