Labour Party Conference Roundtable: Is your city robot-ready? Skills for the future of work

This event at Labour Party Conference will focus on what cities can do – and what they need from central government – to get people and their skills robot-ready.

Event starts at 8.30am on 23 September 2019 at GB1 Terrace, Grand Hotel Brighton

This policy roundtable in Brighton, in partnership with KPMG, will focus on the future of skills in cities, drawing on our report Can cities outsmart the robots? which looked at the projected demand for specific skills in the changing labour market and assessed the current educational outcomes in those skills.

We found a pronounced divide between the Greater South East and the North and Midlands of England in all educational outcomes that might safeguard against future displacement. With the majority of the workforce already in work, lifelong learning outcomes are poor everywhere. We recommended cities create Skills Compacts to focus providers and businesses in their areas on raising attainment in the kind of softer skills employers are likely to seek in the future.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Cllr Christopher Hammond, Leader of Southampton City Council
  • Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council
  • Elena Magrini, Analyst, Centre for Cities
  • Gordon Marsden MP, Shadow Higher and Further Education and Skills Minister
