Crawley remains the city with the highest share of eligible workers on furlough.
On the 21st of August, the government released the latest figures on the uptake of the Job Retention Scheme. It revealed that up until the 31st of July, approximately 9.6 million workers have been placed on furlough through the JRS – an extra 228,000 people compared to June .
Crawley still ranks first, with 41 per cent of eligible local jobs being supported by the JRS scheme, followed by Burnley (37) and Birmingham (35). At the other end of the spectrum, Cambridge, Reading and Peterborough still have the lowest levels of take up for the scheme.

Just like last month, all cities and large towns have seen a growth in claims, but the extent of the increase is relatively lower. However, the geographic variation is still quite clear. In Crawley, the increase corresponds to 3.5 percent of the population eligible for the scheme, against 1.2 percent in Plymouth.
This data confirms that some cities are more likely than others to experience a ‘ V-shaped ‘ recovery. But while the cumulative picture gives us a sense of the places that have been most reliant on the scheme so far, what we now need to know is how businesses in different parts of the country are going back to normal.
