The unemployment rate fell to 7.1 per cent in December: the largest quarterly fall seen since 1997. However, there is still a way to go before it returns to its pre-downturn peak. Unemployment is 1.9 percentage points above its pre-downturn value, productivity remains below prerecession levels and at 0.9 per cent wage growth is still far below inflation of 2.1 per cent.
