London, Bristol and Liverpool face meaningful mayoral elections

A Sadiq Khan victory in London will be interpreted as a thumbs-up for Jeremy Corbyn, while defeat for Zac Goldsmith would represent a blow for Brexit campaigners. North of the border, an increase in seats for the Scottish National Party could prompt fresh talk of another vote on Scottish independence.

However, amid all the speculation about national issues, the local significance of the mayoral elections in London, Liverpool and Bristol should not be overlooked, as the outcome will have a big impact on the lives of people living in those cities.
