Centre for Cities welcomed Pulitzer Prize-winning author Amy Goldstein as a guest speaker at City Horizons on 3 October 2018. In her talk, Goldstein shared insights from her book ‘Janesville’, which tells the story of what happens to an industrial town in America’s heartland when its factory shuts down. This is a topic that resonates strongly with industrial towns and cities in the UK, where references to being ‘left behind’ have become commonplace. Goldstein was able to shed light on the implications of economic shocks like this for similar cities here and around the Western world.
