Cities Northwest: Rethinking the Northwest Spatial Economy

This conference, taking place at Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, debated how cities in the northwest and beyond can work together, compete and grow. Marking the launch of a new report, 'Rethinking the Northwest Spatial Economy', the conference explored the ways our cities link to and compliment each other and how they contribute to regional growth.

Cities Northwest book launch

On Monday 10 July we published a booklet with the Northwest Development Agency called 'Cities Northwest'. It discusses the prospects for city-regional governance in the North West, starting with Greater Manchester. This follows up our City Leadership report, published in February.

This conference brought together practitioners in government and commerce together with leading academics in the area to explore practical questions for advisers and policy-makers.
Core Cities Summit 2006

This summit in Bristol brought together stakeholders and government representatives following the submission of city-region business cases to the former ODPM. It focused on common themes and proposals that have emerged and achieving a better collective understanding of how they can be delivered successfully as part of the 'New Deal for Cities, Towns and Regions'.

Regeneration & Renewal National Conference

This two day conference explored four key aspects of regeneration: community involvement, the private sector, funding and evaluation. It looked at investment in deprived areas and what motivates the private sector to invest, existing funding for community-led groups such as social enterprises and new sources of funding including community development finance institutions.
British Council for Offices annual conference

Ireland had the least impressive economic performance in Western Europe until the last decade of the twentieth century. In the last 15 years, a national effort has emerged which has engineered recovery and growth. This conference asked whether this growth is sustainable, and looked at how Dublin has responded in comparison to other European cities such as London.

Cities and Regions or City-Regions?

This NLGN conference looked at the debate currently influencing government thinking on city-region structures. It considered whether these frameworks should use existing or new structures and effective frameworks for rural and less urbanised areas. Topics to be covered included the city-regions framework, the economic case for city-regions, and the implications of city-regions for local and regional governance.
SURF Annual Conference

SURF (Scottish Urban Regeneration Forum) is Scotland's independent regeneration network. This conference in Dundee looked at regeneration in England, at a UK level, and the current set of arrangements for supporting successful urban regeneration in Scotland.
City Leadership report launch

Our City Leadership report sets out the case for financial devolution to towns, cities and city-regions - with a particular focus on Barnsley, Birmingham and Liverpool. The event was held in Birmingham and presented the key findings of the report and discussed policy implications.
